Garden beds in Traralgon
Traralgon is the largest town in the Latrobe Valley, with an older grid of streets around the centre and newer estates growing on its northern and eastern edges. Two households a few kilometres apart can face quite different starting points, so begin with what is actually in your yard.

Central streets: work around what has grown
In established parts of Traralgon, the best sun is often already claimed by a mature tree, a carport or a neighbour's extension. Check the candidate spot at midday in winter, when shadows are longest, rather than relying on how it looks in summer.
Large trees will send roots toward a watered open-base bed. Site beds outside the canopy where you can, and look for buried paths or old edging before levelling.

Estate edges: check the ground first
Newer Traralgon estates may have compacted ground under fresh turf. Push a spade in at the exact spot; if it stops hard, a taller bed gives roots more depth in purchased mix.
If water ponds on the surface after rain, that needs fixing before installation, by redirecting runoff or choosing another spot. Extra bed height does not drain saturated ground.

Frost and the planting calendar
Clear, still Valley nights can bring frost into spring, and low parts of a yard are usually the coldest. If your yard has a slope, the higher side is generally the safer choice for early seedlings.
Hold tomatoes, beans and zucchini until local frost risk has passed, and keep frost cloth and hoops handy for clear nights.

Questions
Traralgon FAQs
My Traralgon yard is shaded in winter. Is it worth a bed?
Yes for leafy greens and herbs, which cope with part shade. Fruiting summer crops need the sunniest spot you have.
My estate yard is hard ground. What now?
A taller bed gives roots more depth in good mix. If water also ponds there after rain, fix drainage first.
Do I need frost protection?
On clear spring nights, frost cloth over young seedlings is worthwhile, especially in lower parts of the yard.
