Garden beds in Inverloch

Inverloch mixes permanent homes with holiday houses on sandy coastal ground near Anderson Inlet. Whether a bed will be watered daily or left between visits makes a big difference to how it should be set up.

Permanent or part-time?

If you live in Inverloch year-round, a standard open-base bed with good mix and regular watering works well. If the house is used on weekends or holidays, plan for long gaps without water.

For part-time gardens, a sealed base with wicking plus thick mulch can stretch the time between waterings, but it still needs refilling and will not water itself indefinitely. Hardy herbs and perennials cope better than thirsty summer crops.

Sandy ground drains, then dries

Where an Inverloch block is on sandy soil, drainage is rarely the problem but water holding is. Where your ground is sandy, add plenty of compost to the fill.

Some properties further from the beach have heavier ground, so check yours rather than assuming.

Coastal wind and salt

Onshore winds can burn leaves and dry beds quickly. Place beds on the sheltered side of the house or behind established coastal planting.

Wash salt off foliage with a gentle spray after strong onshore blows if you are there to do it.

Questions

Inverloch FAQs

I am only at my Inverloch house on weekends. Will a bed survive?

A sealed base with wicking, refilled each visit, plus heavy mulch can help. Choose and plant hardy crops. Consider a timer on a drip line if the property has a tap.

Do I need to improve sandy soil?

For the fill, yes: compost helps hold water. For an open base on sand, drainage is fine.

Where should the bed go?

On the sheltered side of the house, with the most sun you can get out of the wind.
