Garden beds in Sale

Sale is the service hub for Wellington Shire, set on the low, flat country near where the Thomson and Latrobe rivers meet. On level ground, the most useful thing you can do before choosing a bed is watch how water behaves on your own block.

Flat ground: watch the water

On a flat Sale yard, water has no obvious place to go. After a heavy fall, walk the yard and note where it lingers; even a few centimetres of rise can make one spot noticeably drier.

If water stands where you want a bed, resolve it before installation by redirecting runoff or picking another site. A raised bed gives roots a deeper zone of good mix, but it does not drain the soil underneath.

Heat, wind and watering

Sale summers can bring hot, drying winds across open country. Raised beds lose moisture faster than surrounding ground, so keep them close to a tap and mulch the surface thickly.

A sealed base with wicking can lengthen the time between waterings, as long as the reservoir is checked and refilled through hot spells.

Layout and reach

If your yard has room, a modular or round bed with access on every side is easy to work. On a narrower block, a slimline against a fence uses a strip that might otherwise be lawn.

Plan paths for a wheelbarrow, and for a mower if beds sit in lawn, so edges do not become a trimming chore.

Questions

Sale FAQs

My block is dead flat. Is drainage an issue?

It can be. Check where water lingers after heavy rain, and fix standing water before installing.

How do I cut summer watering?

Mulch, water early and keep beds near a tap. A wicking base helps if you keep its reservoir topped up.

How wide should paths be?

Wide enough for a wheelbarrow, and for a mower if beds sit in lawn.
